Amherst Securities Group Executive Management

Sean Dobson

Chief Executive Officer and Chairman

Mr. Dobson has been the head mortgage analyst and trader at Amherst Securities since he joined the firm in 2000. Mr. Dobson is widely recognized as one of the leading strategists in the industry and an expert in all facets of the mortgage business including loans, RMBS and related derivatives. He has led the development of Amherst's loan level diagnostic system (ALIAS) that is well-known for its predictive analytics. In 2006, he made a vocal announcement predicting the coming meltdown in the mortgage markets based on research produced using these tools.  In August 2008, he successfully completed a $225 million capital raise led by Stone Point Capital to expand the broker dealer and finance new initiatives in CMBS, advisory and asset management.
Mr. Dobson has over 20 years of experience in the mortgage industry, including previous senior management positions with Spires Financial and the MMAR Group, Inc. He currently serves as a board member of the American Securitization Forum, and his advice on mortgage policy matters is regularly sought by congressional leaders, housing policy leaders at the Treasury and other government agencies and senior administration officials at the White House.

Joe Walsh

President

Mr. Walsh co-manages the business and operations of the Amherst Companies. Mr. Walsh has been in the mortgage-backed securities business for almost 25 years. Prior to joining Amherst in 2009, he served as a Managing Director in the private equity business at Fortress Investment Group, specializing in financial institutions. Mr. Walsh also served for nine years as a Managing Director and Head of Mortgage and Asset-Backed Origination, Finance and Trading at RBS Greenwich Capital. Mr. Walsh earned his AB in Biology at Princeton University.

Alan Gilbert

Vice Chairman

Mr. Gilbert CPA, CFA helps manage the Capital Markets activities at Amherst Securities. Prior to joining Amherst as a founding partner in 1993, Mr. Gilbert headed the Latin American sales effort at CS First Boston, and previously worked in the Capital Markets team at Kidder Peabody. Mr. Gilbert earned an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a BSBA in Accounting, with honors, from Georgetown University.

Terence Browne

Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Officer

Mr. Browne joined Amherst in 2004 and is responsible for organizational operations, legal and new business structuring matters. Previously, Mr. Browne was: Interim CEO and CFO & General Counsel of COVEGA Corporation (opto-electronic component developer); General Counsel of Partners First Holdings, LLC (credit card affiliate of Bank of Montreal); Associate in the Banking & Finance practice of Mayer Brown; and Senior Attorney, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Mr. Browne received his MBA – Finance from Johns Hopkins University, JD from Boston University, and BA, magna cum laude, from University at Albany.

Michael Sullivan

Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Sullivan, CPA, joined Amherst in 2005. He was previously SVP-CFO of Guaranty Residential Lending, Inc., (f.k.a. Temple-Inland Mortgage Company). Prior to Guaranty, Mr. Sullivan served as the President & CFO of the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation, and began his 16-year career in the mortgage finance business with the Lomas Financial Group. He earned his BBA in accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Darla Bartkowiak

Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer

Ms. Bartkowiak has managed Amherst's compliance initiatives since 2002. She has over 30 years of securities industry experience, including experience in trading, sales and back office operations. Prior to joining Amherst, she engaged in compliance consulting, and previously worked in compliance positions with FINRA in Dallas and Southwest Securities. Ms. Bartkowiak is a FINRA Industry Arbitrator and currently holds several industry licenses. She graduated with honors from Amberton University with a BS in Human Relations and Business.

Stephen Coale

Managing Director, Amherst Securities Group

Mr. Coale joined Amherst in 1994 and has worked with credit union investment portfolios since 1986. He is a seasoned professional well versed in all NCUA rules and regulations pertaining to investment securities (703.5), Prompt Corrective Action (PCA), and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) 115 issues.
Mr. Coale created the SLYD-CR (Safety, Liquidity, Yield, Diversification, Cashflow, and Regulatory Consideration) methodology, a cash management method designed exclusively for credit unions.
An active educator, Mr. Coale delivers Credit Union Board Investment Training Sessions throughout the country. He is a registered sponsor with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) and a past chairman of the Financial Suppliers Advisory Committee, a division of CUES (1993-1995).
Mr. Coale has a BS from the University of Montana, Missoula.

Daniel Hoffman

Senior Managing Director - Sales

Mr. Hoffman joined Amherst in May, 2010 as the Head of Sales and is responsible for managing Amherst’s fixed income sales group. Mr. Hoffman has been in  fixed income and mortgage sales for 25 years.  Prior to joining Amherst he served as a Managing Director in sales at the Royal Bank of Scotland.  Mr. Hoffman also served as a Senior Managing Director at Bear, Stearns and Co., where he worked for 22 years. As Head of Mortgage and Rate Sales at Bear, Stearns, Mr. Hoffman was responsible for all residential mortgage products; asset-backed securities, commercial mortgages, CDO and CLOs; and all U.S. rate products. He received his MBA from the University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business in Finance/Marketing.

Laurie Goodman

Senior Managing Director - RMBS Strategy

Ms. Goodman heads up Amherst’s strategic, business development and research initiatives. Prior to joining Amherst in 2008, Ms. Goodman was Managing Director and Head of Global Fixed Income Research at UBS, where she also ran the Secured Products Research Group and wrote The Mortgage Strategist, a top mortgage strategy report on Wall Street, for more than 15 years. Institutional Investor has, for 11 years (1998-2008), ranked Laurie as the #1 Mortgage Strategy and Agency Structured Products analyst. In 2009 Ms. Goodman was inducted into the prestigious Fixed Income Analysts Society’s Hall of Fame. She has published more than 180 articles in popular and professional publications and has co-authored five books on the mortgage industry. Ms. Goodman received a BA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and PhD in Economics from Stanford University.

Darrell Wheeler

Senior Managing Director - CMBS Strategy

Mr. Wheeler heads up Amherst’s CMBS strategy. Prior to joining Amherst in 2010, Mr. Wheeler served as Managing Director within Citigroup’s Global Corporate and Investment Bank, and Global Head of Securitized Strategy and Analysis at Citigroup, overseeing the ABS research group and serving as the company’s lead CMBS strategist. At Citi, his research team was ranked #1 for 6 consecutive years (2003-2008) in Institutional Investor’s Fixed Income Research Survey. Mr. Wheeler was educated in Canada, where he earned and HBA and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School of Business.

Stephen Coale

Managing Director

Mr. Coale joined Amherst in 1994 and has worked with credit union investment portfolios since 1986. Chris Thomas

Senior Vice President

Mr. Thomas joined Amherst in 1994 and is well versed in all NCUA rules and regulations pertaining to institutional investments.

Mr. Thomas has been an investment consultant with many Fortune 500 companies. He delivers Credit Union Board Investment Training Sessions throughout the country.

Mr. Thomas holds a BBA in Finance from Texas A&M University.
